TALC Schedules and Events

FREE English Classes

  • Our Sumner classes meet every Tuesday at the Sumner Family Center. The Basics and Beginner courses meet at 9:00 am to 11:00 am The Intermediate course meets at 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

    Please note that the Summer classes will NOT meet on December 24th or December 31st, 2024. The class WILL meet on January 7, 2025.

  • Our Parkland class meets every Wednesday at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm through at the Pierce County Library in Parkland.

    Please note that class will NOT meet on December 25th, 2024, nor January 1st, 2025. Class WILL meet on January 8th, 2025.

  • We are working on establishing more classes throughout Pierce County. If you’d like to see a class in your area, we would like to know where we are needed! Please contact us and let us know!

Tutor Training

  • Fall Tutor Training has brought us a fabulous batch of new tutors to help spread literacy in Pierce County. We are so glad they have joined us!

  • Our next training program for new tutors will take place on the following dates (note that new tutors are expected to attend all of the dates listed below):

    • Saturday, February 15th, 2025 (full day in person in University Place)

    • Tuesdays and Thursdays February 18th, 20th, 25th, 27th, and March 4th and 6th, 2025 (evenings via Zoom)

    • Saturday, March 15th, 2025 (full day in person in University Place)

  • Our Fall Tutor Training will be in September to October of 2025. We will have precise dates closer to that time, so please check back for more details.

TALC Library Open

The TALC library is located in University Place. The library will be open for the following open house:

TALC Talks

Online Tutoring Resource Demonstration

Join us on Zoom on February 26th, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion about tutoring online! We’ll see a demonstration of a web-based tutoring platform that comes equipped with lesson plans, assignments, quizzes, and more. This platform can be used to assist tutors who are tutoring online, and can also be used when tutoring in person. After the demonstration, you’ll be invited to ask questions and provide comments and see if this platform would be right for your learner.

Conversation Nights for ESL Learners

Social Events

Our Fourth Annual Summer Picnic will be on Sunday, August 24th, 2025, from 3 pm to 8 pm at Bradley Lake Park in Puyallup! This is our rare chance to see everybody all in one place! We will be sending an invite to tutors so that they may RSVP for themselves, their learners, and family members. As always, hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided, and we ask everyone to bring a dish to share. We also ask that everyone bring their own beverages (preferably in a reusable or recyclable container) to reduce waste. Check back here for any updates!

Our Annual Winter Potluck Brunch for tutors will be on Saturday, January 25th, 2025 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at the Community of Christ Church. TALC will provide beverages, and all tutors are welcome to bring a brunch dish to share. The library will be available during brunch, as well. This event is open to ALL tutors, retired or active or brand new! We want to see you!
